2007 Bass Pro Shop Marathon
On November 4, 2007 I was in Springfield, MO for the innagural Bass Pro Shop Marathon. The day started with a brisk 38 degrees -- perfect for a 26.2 mile run.
My goal for the race was to hold an 8:30 pace and finish just under 3 hours 45 minutes for a new PR. I kept my pace for the first 21 miles and then began to feel the fatigue. I was just under 3 hours into the marathon and so far was having a very good run. The sun had come out and the temperature had risen to a comfortable 55 degrees. I had shed my headband, gloves and jacket that I started with several miles back (a little too early it turned out). I decided to enjoy the last 5 miles and eased my pace to what was comfortable.
The course proved to be more hilly than advertised, but not terrible. While devoid of spectators and supporters for most of the course, I was surprised by the level of support from water stations to volunteers providing direction at every turn.
I finished in 3 hours 53 minutes, just 8 minutes off my goal. I didn't PR, but after my experience in Chicago, I was happy to run a marathon and feel good afterwords.
Now I look forward to 2008... and a return to Chicago.
